Class Title: Director of Cemetery & Parks

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

This position receives general supervision and direction from the Assistant to the City Manager.  The purpose of this position is to provide general supervision to Parks, Cemetery, Sports Complex and Municipal Pool Activities of the City. Maintain a safe, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing park environment. Ensure preventative maintenance standards are followed and coordinating work assignments.  This is accomplished by overseeing grounds maintenance, the cleaning and routine maintenance of buildings and the upkeep of equipment.  Other duties may include overseeing pool maintenance, assisting with park services, scheduling use of park facilities, maintaining records and interfacing with other employees and citizens, and other administrative duties within the department.  This position provides direction to other employees.

Maintains safe, healthy, and aesthetically pleasing park grounds and facilities by training personnel, scheduling and assigning personnel to complete landscaping and maintenance work and receiving bids from Contractors.

Maintains the interior and exterior of facilities by repairing damage to outer and inner surfaces of structures.

Ensures safe swimming pool conditions by adhering to pool maintenance standards.

Formal Education / Knowledge

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with a two year associate's degree, diploma or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school.  Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.  Relevant experience may serve as a substitute.  Although not required, an accredited four year Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, turf management, landscaping, or closely related field is preferred. 

Experience

Over two years up to and including three years of relevant experience.  Relevant formal education may serve as a substitute. 

Certification and Other Requirements

Class C Valid Drivers License, Pool Operator Certificate, Licensed Irrigator and Chemical Applicators License.  Licenses may be obtained upon employment if necessary not including a Class C Valid Drivers License.  Other certification requirements may be assigned. 

Reading

Intermediate - Ability to recognize meaning of common and technical multi-syllable words.  Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.

Math

Intermediate - Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.

Writing

Intermediate - Ability to write simple and complex sentences containing subject, verb, and object, and/or series of numbers, names, and addresses.  Ordinarily, such education is obtained in college.  However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.

Managerial

Receives administrative directions. The employee normally performs the duty assignment within broad parameters defined by general organizational requirements and accepted practices. Total end results determine effectiveness of job performance.

Budget Responsibility

Has responsibility for assisting in the development of department and project budgets including oversight.  Is authorized to approve budgeted expenditures up to the amount that requires approval of Senior Management.

Supervisory / Organizational Control

Work requires managing and monitoring work performance by directing subordinate supervisors or administrators, including making final decisions on hiring and disciplinary actions, evaluating program/work objectives and effectiveness, and realigning work and staffing assignments, as needed.

Complexity

Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties.  Requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of policies, standards, and precedents.

Interpersonal / Human Relations Skills

Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information with employees and the public. Decisions regarding establishment of policies may be made. Contact may involve support of controversial positions or the negotiation of sensitive issues or important presentations.
