Wellington, Kansas (pop. 7,748; $38 million budget; 127 FTE’s), the Wheat Capital of the World, has all the charm and safety of a small town but is only a short drive south of Wichita. Wellington the county seat of Sumner County, is seeking a City Manager with a strong degree of professionalism and open communication. The City Manager supervises the day-to-day activities of all employees, updates the council regarding city finances, and communicates directives from the governing body to the City staff.
Wellington possesses a strong park system, an airport, manages electric, water, wastewater, sanitation and a police and fire department. Wellington also has a strong transportation network, comprised of multiple highways - US-81, US-160, and I-35; two major railroad companies and the Wellington Municipal Airport.
The governing body seeks candidates with strong interpersonal skills who can communicate well with citizens, businesses, the commission, and City staff. Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree/master’s degree in public administration or a related field, and at least five years of local government experience and a master’s degree is preferred. The successful candidate must also be able to competently create and manage budgets, oversee and develop personnel, and foster excellent intergovernmental relationships.
