Description
Wide-open spaces and community spirit abound in Columbia, Missouri, which has earned numerous recognitions for its outstanding quality of life. Centrally located in the continental U.S. and between Kansas City and St. Louis along Interstate 70, Columbia offers convenient access to 11 major cities within 500 miles. The city is the largest in Boone County and has a population of 125,200 within its 64 square miles.

Under the direction of the Deputy City Manager, the Public Works Director oversees department programs in engineering design and surveys, public building maintenance, transit system, street and sidewalk construction and maintenance, public parking, traffic control, vehicle and equipment maintenance, and contract administration.

The City of Columbia is seeking a skilled and visionary leader who values relationship building, customer service, and a community committed to building a better future for its residents, businesses, and visitors. The ideal candidate is energetic, honest, fair, and creative, a respected servant leader who is not afraid to engage in difficult conversations or implement change when necessary to move the organization forward.

This position requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering, with a master’s degree in a relevant field preferred. Candidates should also have at least 10 years of Public Works experience in municipal government, and five years of supervisory experience is desired.
Certifications from the American Public Works Association and expertise in a similar-sized department—or larger—are a plus, as are certifications by the American Institute of Certified Planners or as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer.
Additionally, candidates should be licensed as a Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri or have the ability to obtain their license within one year of their hire date.

The City of Columbia is offering a starting salary of $96,013 to $168,605 for this position, dependent on qualifications and experience.
