Ideally situated on Amelia Island, approximately 36 miles from downtown Jacksonville, Fernandina Beach is the northernmost city on Florida’s Atlantic coast. It covers 15.7 square miles and is the county seat of Nassau County. The City offers great connectivity and easy access to the Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport, just three miles from the City’s historic downtown district, and Jacksonville International Airport, located just 26 miles away. The City’s 13,527 residents enjoy its beautiful natural backdrop and its charming, small-town feel.
The City seeks candidates for its successor Parks & Recreation Director who are bold, persistent, professional, and comfortable with community engagement to become an integral member of a dynamic Senior Leadership Team in the delivery and evaluation of current operations and in the development of new programs and facilities for Fernandina Beach. Work is performed under the administrative direction of the Deputy City Manager/Engineer. Direct reports include an Assistant Parks & Recreation Director, Parks & Recreation Manager, Administrative Coordinator, Parks Superintendent, and a Staff Assistant.
The Park & Recreation Department has over 455 acres of parkland and three recreation facilities and is the largest City department outside of public safety services, as measured by number of employees (25-full-time and approximately 40 part-time employees) and operates with an annual budget of approximately $4.1 million.
The selected candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Administration, Recreation, or a related field, (master’s degree preferred) with seven to ten years’ experience as a senior manager in an environment/program of similar size, scope, and function. National Recreation and Parks Association credentials (Certified Park and Recreation Professional, Certified Park and Recreation Executive) desired. The final candidate should also possess and/or be able to secure a valid Florida driver’s license within a reasonable period following appointment coupled with an acceptable driving record. The desired starting salary range for the position is $90,000 - $95,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
